A public meeting attended by Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath in Melbourne has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with debate focusing on both the content of the event and attendance figures.

The discussion, organised by members of the Sri Lankan community in Melbourne, was held at Springvale Town Hall and reportedly attracted more than 250 participants. The event was also covered by the AusLanka TV media network.
During his address, Minister Herath outlined the current government’s policies, future development plans, and issues affecting Sri Lankans living in Australia. He also spoke about corruption allegations against former politicians, recent legal actions involving several high-profile figures, and developments related to the Easter Sunday attacks investigation.
However, some attendees reportedly expressed disappointment that much of the discussion focused on past political controversies rather than issues directly affecting Sri Lankans living overseas and the country’s future development.
Photos from the event later circulated on social media, triggering debate over attendance after some images appeared to show empty seats in the hall.
During the question-and-answer session, participants raised concerns about Sri Lanka’s development plans, opportunities for overseas Sri Lankan professionals to contribute to the country, and the fees charged for dual citizenship applications.
Reports indicate that some attendees left before the conclusion of the event, citing the Minister’s late arrival, the length of the speech, and limited time allocated for questions from the audience.
Responding to the discussion, Minister Herath stated on social media that the hall’s limited capacity prevented all those who attended from being accommodated inside.
The Foreign Minister is expected to participate in several additional official engagements during his visit to Australia and is also scheduled to meet Sri Lankan communities in other Australian cities.
