Melbourne man gets 28 years for girlfriend’s murder

A Victorian court has sentenced 45-year-old Toby Loughnan to 28 years in prison for murdering his girlfriend and disposing of her body in remote bushland.

The crime took place in April 2021, with Loughnan claiming his 37-year-old girlfriend died due to a lack of ambulance services while she was heavily using drugs.

The jury dismissed Loughnan’s claim, pointing to evidence that he had fatally assaulted his girlfriend before attempting to conceal the crime.

Her remains were discovered in a grave at Cape Shanks, Melbourne, in 2023, two years after her death.

Following the discovery, her relatives filed a case, ultimately leading to Loughnan’s conviction and lengthy prison sentence.
