Melbourne housing scam wipes out millions

A couple in Victoria has fallen victim to cybercriminals who robbed them of their home.

In a separate incident, a young couple in Queensland was scammed out of $170,000 by a fraudster who stole their home deposit.

Sarah and her husband, Line, had planned to purchase a 5,000 square metre rural property on the Gold Coast for $1.3 million.

They had already paid a $65,000 deposit to the agent and later received an email instructing them to pay an additional $252,000.

Sarah said the email appeared to come from a familiar address similar to the one they had used to exchange official documents, so she followed the payment instructions.

Unbeknownst to them, scammers had impersonated a law firm using a fake email account.

The funds were later traced to an NAB account in Melbourne and multiple other accounts.

While banks were able to recover $82,000, the couple still suffered a loss of $170,000.

Victoria Police are currently investigating the incident.
