Two Melbourne families have been left shaken after a group of teenagers allegedly broke into their homes and stole their cars while they were asleep.

Peter Morgan and his pregnant wife were woken just after 1 a.m. yesterday when their dog barked at intruders outside their Maidstone home in the city’s north-west. Doorbell camera footage captured one of the men before he allegedly climbed a fence and entered through the back door.

According to police, the group stole Morgan’s Volkswagen along with keys to a second car, two watches, and a wallet. However, the stolen Volkswagen was returned three hours later when the gang allegedly targeted Morgan’s neighbour, Victor.

One of the teenagers reportedly jumped over Victor’s fence, entered through a window, and was caught on camera rummaging through the front room before fleeing with his Holden wagon. Using tracking technology, Victor located his car at a service station, where his stolen credit card had also been used twice. He kept police updated, which eventually led to the arrests.

Since the incident, both families said they have been unable to sleep.

An 18-year-old man from Maidstone was arrested in the passenger seat of a Honda and charged with aggravated burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, attempted theft, theft, drug possession, and several driving offences. He has been remanded in custody.

Another 18-year-old man from Western Australia allegedly fled on foot to Delacey Street, where he attempted to steal another car. With help from the car’s owner, police arrested him. He has been charged with aggravated burglary, motor vehicle theft, attempted motor vehicle theft, theft, obtaining property by deception, and driving-related offences.

Additionally, an 18-year-old man from Lara and a 19-year-old man from Wyndham Vale were arrested inside a home on Inkerman Street. They were later released pending further investigations.
