Medical specialist urges calm amid foggy conditions

With widespread foggy conditions affecting many parts of the country, Consultant Respiratory Physician Dr. Neranjan Dissanayake has urged the public not to panic, emphasizing that such weather is not unusual.

However, he recommends that individuals with respiratory conditions wear masks during this period, while also noting that masks can be beneficial for others as well. Dr. Dissanayake pointed out that standard surgical masks may not provide full protection against the fine particles present in the fog.

He also emphasized that the effect on individuals without respiratory issues depends on the specific substances in the air, advising sensitive individuals to remain vigilant.

Recent data from the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) indicates a significant rise in air pollution levels across several regions, including Colombo, Kandy, Puttalam, Vavuniya, and Jaffna. The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has more than doubled in recent days, reaching values between 100 and 150 on the U.S. Air Quality Index. This level of pollution is particularly harmful to sensitive groups.

The NBRO attributes the poor air quality to a combination of polluted air from India and locally generated pollutants. As of 29th of January 2025, Sri Lanka’s real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) stands at 132, categorized as ‘Poor,’ which can pose significant risks for sensitive individuals, who are advised to limit outdoor activities.

Dr. Dissanayake urges the public to stay updated on air quality levels and take necessary precautions, particularly those with existing respiratory conditions.
