Measures underway to reactivate inactive Tsunami warning towers

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) has launched a program to reactivate tsunami warning towers that are currently out of operation.

Director General of the DMC, Retired Major General Sampath Kotuwegoda, said that assistance from India will also be sought to support this initiative.

Following the 2004 tsunami disaster, 77 tsunami warning towers were installed along Sri Lanka’s coastal belt to alert the public in the event of a tsunami. However, all of these towers are presently inactive.
