NPP Colombo District MP Aruna Panagoda announced that a decision has been made to relocate a herd of deer roaming in several Grama Seva Divisions in Homagama.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, he stated that an estimated 1,500 to 2,500 deer in the area have been causing significant damage to farmers’ crops.
He highlighted that five to six Grama Seva Divisions in the Homagama electorate have been struggling with an excessive deer population for years. In response, the Wildlife Department has initiated efforts to address the issue.
To determine the exact deer population, a survey was launched in collaboration with the Wildlife Department.
MP Panagoda confirmed that authorities have now decided to capture the deer safely and relocate them to a more suitable environment.
