Marble-sized balls prompt closure of Sydney beaches

After months of mysterious black balls causing closures at Sydney’s beaches, small marble-like debris has once again been washing up, prompting further beach closures.

The new grey or white balls have led to the closure of nine beaches, including popular spots like Manly and Dee Why, while authorities investigate the cause.

In October, eight beaches, including Bondi, were closed due to black deposits, which were later determined to likely be the result of a sewage spill.

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins expressed concern over the new debris, saying authorities are unsure of its origin, which adds to the worry.

The New South Wales Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and local councils are collecting the debris for testing and are inspecting other beaches for further contamination.

Despite investigations, the source of the waste causing the “fatbergs” remains unknown, with some politicians and scientists questioning the safety of Sydney’s beaches.
