Starting from 7th of June all individuals seeking self-employment in non-domestic sector jobs overseas must have their employment agreements certified as part of the mandatory registration process, according to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).
SLBFE Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe stated that the decision follows a comprehensive investigation into the challenges faced by Sri Lankan migrant workers in the non-domestic sector.
Under the new regulation, employment contracts must be certified by the Sri Lankan Embassy in the respective country before applicants can proceed with registration for foreign employment.
In countries where Sri Lanka does not have diplomatic missions, employment agreements must be approved by the SLBFE’s head office, its airport unit, or any of its district offices.
The certification process is now a compulsory requirement for all non-domestic employment registrations, aimed at improving the protection and welfare of Sri Lankan workers abroad.
