A man has allegedly been caught red-handed stealing copper cables from a street in Melbourne, according to Victoria Police.
Police were called to Springvale Road in Mulgrave at around 3 a.m. today following reports of a suspicious vehicle.
Witnesses informed officers that a man had been moving back and forth between a cabling pit and the parked car. Upon inspection, police discovered a 34-year-old man hiding inside the pit, which had been concealed with gum tree branches.
Officers recovered a grinder and several cut copper cables from the pit. A subsequent search of the suspect’s vehicle allegedly uncovered a firearm and mismatched registration plates.
The man was arrested at the scene and is expected to be interviewed by police.
