Australia is set for major changes on its roads, with tougher penalties, stricter e-bike regulations and stronger motorcycle laws coming into effect from July 1.

The new measures aim to improve road safety by targeting dangerous riding behaviour, illegal modifications and high-powered e-bikes that do not meet safety standards.

Authorities are introducing stronger enforcement powers, including increased fines and tighter requirements for some e-bike and personal mobility device users.

Police across several states have already begun cracking down on illegal e-bikes, with officers warning that modified bikes with excessive speed or power can create serious risks for riders and other road users.

The reforms are also expected to bring changes for motorcycle riders, as governments continue efforts to reduce road trauma and improve compliance with safety laws.

Officials say the goal is to balance the growing popularity of e-bikes with the need to keep Australian roads safer for everyone.
