Major allegations hit top Sri Lankan tea brands

A foreign investigation has revealed that several of Sri Lanka’s largest tea factories have failed to meet the basic needs of their estate workers.

Despite initiatives introduced by organizations like the Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade International to improve conditions, many tea estate owners have reportedly fallen short in providing essential support.

Investigators found that tea workers are often denied basic necessities such as minimum wages, safe working and living conditions, and access to clean drinking water.

Alarmingly, some of the world’s top tea brand suppliers have been linked to these violations.

The report also highlights serious concerns, including crumbling housing facilities and instances of child labor on Sri Lankan tea estates.

While Sri Lanka’s lush tea plantations are admired for their scenic beauty, media reports emphasize that the lives of the workers behind the industry tell a very different, troubling story.
