Former Mahinda Rajapaksa said the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could have a significant impact on the future of Sri Lanka.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after attending the unveiling ceremony of the newly constructed sacred pinnacle of the Noble Stupa at Siri Mangalaramaya Viharaya.
Responding to questions from journalists, Rajapaksa also commented on the current political climate and several issues concerning the country. When asked about the present government’s service to the Buddha Sasana, he questioned whether the administration was providing adequate support, noting that during his tenure the Buddha Sasana had been given the highest regard.
Rajapaksa also addressed the arrest and detention of retired Major General Suresh Sallay, who served as head of the State Intelligence Service during his administration.
“He should be commended for his service, not imprisoned. This is no time to imprison,” Rajapaksa said.
Commenting further on global developments, the former President warned that a prolonged conflict in the Middle East could create serious challenges for Sri Lanka and affect the country’s future.
When asked about the overall situation in the country, Rajapaksa replied, “There is nothing to say about that. The people know more about it than I do.”
