Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa says the opposition has the strength to form a new government if all opposition parties unite and work together.

Speaking to the media after attending a religious event, Rajapaksa expressed confidence that greater cooperation among opposition parties could pave the way for a new administration.

Commenting on opposition politicians who are currently in custody, he said that although some leaders have been imprisoned, their parties and remaining members continue to carry out political activities.

Rajapaksa also claimed that the legal cases filed against members of his political circle and family are politically motivated, alleging that they are acts of retaliation by the current government.

Responding to questions about the return of former Minister Basil Rajapaksa to Sri Lanka, the former President said he was unaware of his travel plans and suggested that the question be directed to Basil Rajapaksa himself.
