Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that his involvement in the war was never for personal gain or political power, but purely in the pursuit of lasting peace.
He made these remarks on 20th of May while attending the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s (SLPP) Ranaviru Commemoration held near the National War Heroes’ Memorial in Battaramulla. Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa also participated in the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Mahinda Rajapaksa said his presence was a matter of duty and responsibility. “We came here today to fulfil a responsibility. Yes, we fought a war—but it was for peace, not for revenge or control. We fought to protect the country,” he said.
He acknowledged the uncertainty of the future, saying that what lies ahead depends on future governments. He also reflected on the nature of war, stating, “War is always a tragedy. But our armed forces achieved victory. In war, only one side can prevail.”
Rajapaksa concluded by affirming that national security remains a top priority and that the peace secured through the war must continue to be protected.
