Mahela Jayawardene backs ‘winning mentality’ to secure record sixth IPL title

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene believes the team’s strong “winning mentality” and experienced core, including Rohit Sharma, can drive them to a record sixth IPL title.

After a shaky start to the season, with just one win in their first five games, Mumbai bounced back to win seven of their next eight and secured a playoff spot.

Mumbai defeated Gujarat Titans by 20 runs in the eliminator and will face Punjab Kings next in Ahmedabad to determine who meets Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final on June 3.

Jayawardene credited Mumbai’s turnaround to the team’s deep-rooted winning culture and the influence of senior players who have previously lifted the IPL trophy.

Rohit Sharma led Mumbai’s batting with a commanding 81, supported by Jonny Bairstow’s 47, helping the team post 228-5 despite challenging dew conditions.

Jasprit Bumrah, returning after a serious back injury, delivered a clinical performance with figures of 1-27, including the crucial wicket of Washington Sundar.

Mahela praised Bumrah’s confidence and experience, calling him a “massive asset” whose reputation and composure in key moments are invaluable.

Rohit, who recently retired from Test cricket, has scored 410 runs in 14 innings this season and continues to be a key performer in high-pressure matches.

Jayawardene emphasized that Rohit’s ability to rise to big occasions is irreplaceable and a major advantage for the team.

Punjab Kings, despite being bundled out for 101 in the first qualifier, remain hopeful, with captain Shreyas Iyer asserting, “we lost the battle but not the war.”

While Punjab topped the league table, they are yet to win an IPL title, adding extra stakes to their upcoming clash with the five-time champions.
