Locals shunned by tourist service providers amid surge in foreign visitors

Discriminatory treatment of local tourists by service providers is becoming a growing concern in Sri Lanka, with numerous complaints lodged with authorities over unequal service.

Many locals report being discouraged or outright denied access to hotels and restaurants, particularly during peak seasons when the demand from foreign tourists is high. This issue is especially prevalent in popular tourist destinations such as Ella and areas in the Southern Province.

The situation has become frustrating for local visitors, who feel sidelined as businesses prioritize foreign clientele for higher profits.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka continues to see a surge in tourist arrivals, with major attractions currently crowded with international travelers.

Adding to concerns, there are also increasing reports of foreign nationals—particularly from Russia, Ukraine, and Israel—engaging in business activities while staying in the country on tourist visas, raising legal and regulatory questions.
