The Department of Excise has announced that only foreign tourists staying in star-class hotels will be allowed to purchase or be served alcoholic beverages during the two dry days of 13th–14th of April coinciding with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
The Excise Department has implemented a nationwide ban on the sale of liquor, meaning all wine stores, taverns, and restaurants will remain closed on these days.
However, the ban does not apply to foreign tourists staying at Ceylon Tourist Board-approved hotels, including those beyond the three-star category, as well as special boutique villas.
The public is urged to report any violations of the Excise Ordinance, such as illegal liquor sales, by calling the Excise Hotline at 1913 for immediate action.
