The University of Peradeniya has issued a safety notice to students and staff following several reported leopard sightings within the university premises.
According to an internal memo issued by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, the decision was taken during a University Safety Committee meeting held on March 4 after recent sightings and related incidents were reported across the campus.
The notice stated that leopards have been spotted in several areas of the university, while a number of attacks on farm animals have also been reported at the Veterinary Teaching Farm.
In light of these developments, the university administration has advised all students and staff to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions while moving within the campus.
Members of the university community have also been urged to avoid walking alone, particularly during early morning, late evening or night hours, and to immediately report any leopard sightings to the University Security Division.
Extra caution has been advised for those in and around the Veterinary Teaching Farm and nearby areas.
