A Sri Lankan leopard was seen resting at the Dehiwala Zoo in Colombo on 1st of August 2025, as part of celebrations marking Sri Lankan Leopard Day.
The Sri Lankan leopard, recognized as the apex predator of the island’s ecosystems, serves as a powerful symbol of the nation’s pride and biodiversity.
Despite its iconic status, the species faces serious threats due to habitat loss and increasing human-wildlife conflict.
Between August 2022 and March 2025, 67 leopard deaths were reported, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts.
The current wild population of Sri Lankan leopards is estimated to be between 700 and 950 individuals.
Sri Lankan Leopard Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this endangered species and preserving its natural habitat.
