The government has decided to appoint Sonali Samarasinghe, wife of the late Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickramatunga, as Ministerial Advisor to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
The appointment, initiated by Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath, is reportedly in progress, according to internal government sources.
Samarasinghe, who fled Sri Lanka after facing threats following her husband’s murder, has previously served as an official at Sri Lanka’s UN Mission.
A dedicated advocate for justice, she has persistently called for an international investigation into Wickramatunga’s murder.
In addition to her diplomatic work, she is a prominent investigative journalist and lawyer.
