Landslide poses threat to Nine-Arch railway bridge tourist area

The Central Cultural Fund (CCF) has warned that the area surrounding the Nine-Arch Railway Bridge in Modara, a popular attraction among both local and foreign tourists, is at risk of landslides due to adverse weather conditions caused by Cyclone Ditwa.

According to the CCF, several buildings in the vicinity have been damaged, impacting ongoing work on a new tourist zone. The project, which includes the electrification of the Nine-Arch Railway Bridge and the development of the surrounding tourist area at an estimated cost of around Rs. 300 million, was originally scheduled for completion this year.

Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, Dr. Nilan Cooray, said that although the disaster has caused delays, there is no intention to suspend the project. He added that measures are being taken to complete the development as quickly as possible, with plans to open the site to tourists next year.
