The Albanese Government is standing by its projected 225,000 net overseas migration figure, despite growing pressure from the Coalition and One Nation to reduce Australia’s migration intake.
The debate comes as housing affordability, infrastructure pressure and population growth remain major political issues.
The Coalition and One Nation are calling for lower migration levels, arguing that reducing arrivals would help ease pressure on Australia’s housing supply.
Labor, however, maintains that migration remains important for addressing workforce needs and supporting the Australian economy. The government’s current projections expect net overseas migration to reach about 225,000 in 2027–28.
The migration debate is expected to remain a major political issue as the government considers changes to visa settings and migration policy.
