Kidney diseases cause 1,600 deaths annually in Sri Lanka

Kidney diseases claim around 1,600 lives annually in Sri Lanka, averaging five deaths per day, according to the Health Promotion Bureau.

Consultant Community Physician Dr. Chintha Gunaratne explained that chronic kidney disease (CKD) and long-term kidney failure reduce urine output and hinder the body’s ability to eliminate excess fluid, leading to multiple complications.

She added that kidney disease can also disrupt red blood cell production, lower vitamin D levels, and interfere with blood pressure regulation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a global increase in kidney-related illnesses, estimating that one in 10 people may develop chronic kidney disease in their lifetime.

WHO projections indicate that by 2050, kidney diseases could become the fifth leading cause of death worldwide.
