Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara has filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), calling for an investigation into the inclusion of inaccurate details about his educational qualifications in the Parliament database.
The Sri Lankan Parliament recently admitted that incorrect information regarding Minister Nanayakkara’s credentials appeared on its official website due to a data entry error.
Director of Legislative Services Jayalath Perera clarified that the title “Dr.” was erroneously added before Minister Nanayakkara’s name in the Members of Parliament directory.
Minister Nanayakkara highlighted that this incident may not be isolated, pointing to ongoing controversies surrounding the educational qualifications of government MPs. He stressed the need for a thorough investigation into how such errors occur.
He further announced plans to pursue a civil lawsuit to address reputational harm caused by misleading media reports on the matter.
Despite the controversy, the Justice Minister welcomed the evolving nature of public discourse, stating that citizens are now raising more relevant questions about Parliament.
“Previously, conversations centered around allegations of MPs engaging in illegal activities like ethanol sales or the appointment of convicted individuals. Today, the public is questioning MPs’ educational qualifications. This shift, largely influenced by the NPP, is a positive outcome for the government,” he said.
