Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara assured Parliament today that no arrested underworld figure will die while in police custody.
He said notorious criminals like Makandure Madush had died in custody in the past, preventing them from revealing the names of politicians connected to the underworld.
“Underworld figures like Madush were allegedly killed in police custody to stop them from exposing political links,” the Minister said.
Nanayakkara added that several underworld figures currently in custody have already started revealing names, and Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala would soon make those names public.
“We are not connected to the underworld and will never protect them. When we investigate and arrest the culprits, do not obstruct the process,” he said.
The Minister further stated that honest politicians have nothing to fear from these revelations — only those with underworld ties should be concerned.
