Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon appeared before the Matara Magistrate’s Court this morning (19th) and was remanded until tomorrow (20th).
Tennakoon, who had obtained a warrant related to a 2023 shooting incident in Weligama, arrived at the court with his lawyers and surrendered voluntarily.
Yesterday, the Court of Appeal dismissed his writ petition, which sought an interim injunction to prevent the implementation of the Matara Magistrate’s Court order regarding the case. The petition was dismissed without being taken up for hearing.
Following this decision, the Court of Appeal directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to immediately arrest Tennakoon and present him before the court. In response, he appeared before the Matara Magistrate’s Court today.
