June tourist arrivals surge driven by Bohra convention in Colombo

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector recorded a significant rise in June 2025, with 138,241 tourist arrivals — a 21.8% increase compared to the same month in 2024. This growth was largely driven by the Bohra Convention, which began on 27th of June and is expected to attract over 15,000 international devotees for the Ashara Mubaraka sermons led by Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin.

Despite this boost, the country fell short of its monthly tourism target, reflecting ongoing challenges in meeting annual goals. The fourth week of June alone saw a notable spike, with 39,688 arrivals due to the religious event.

India remained the top tourist source with 37,934 visitors, followed by the United Kingdom (11,628), China (8,804), and Australia (7,299). The Bohra Convention’s impact was evident, as Pakistan and Bangladesh rose to fifth and sixth positions with 6,833 and 5,826 visitors respectively. Germany, the United States, France, and Canada rounded out the top ten, replacing the Maldives and Russia from last year’s June rankings.
