A Jetstar flight and a Qatar Airways aircraft were involved in a serious near-miss at Sydney Airport on Sunday morning, coming dangerously close to a collision on the tarmac.

The Jetstar pilot reportedly told passengers the aircraft was instructed to hold short while crossing a runway.

However, the Qatar aircraft was unable to be pushed backwards after its towing equipment reportedly broke.

The Jetstar pilot said the situation was only avoided at the last moment, describing it as “only by chance” that the aircraft was able to stop in time.

Footage from inside the Jetstar aircraft reportedly shows the Qatar aircraft nearby. Sydney Airport has been contacted for comment as authorities examine what happened.

The incident comes amid heightened attention on safety at Sydney Airport following another recent runway near-miss involving two Qantas aircraft.
