Japanese defence minister meets PM Harini to boost relations

Japanese Defence Minister Gen. Nakatani paid a courtesy call on Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya at Temple Trees today, where the two leaders discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation in defense and regional security.

Minister Nakatani extended congratulations on behalf of the Japanese government and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. He also emphasized Sri Lanka’s strategic role in maritime security and regional connectivity.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed gratitude for Japan’s continued support, particularly through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and underscored her government’s dedication to transparency, economic reform, and national transformation.

She also shared her administration’s vision of expanding the role of Sri Lanka’s security forces to include responsibilities such as climate response, humanitarian assistance, and maritime protection.

Additionally, both parties explored opportunities for collaboration in trade, investment, and tourism, agreeing to strengthen engagement across five key sectors.

The meeting was attended by Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata and senior officials from both nations.
