
Japan has provided a grant of 300 million Japanese Yen (approximately LKR 565 million) to Sri Lanka under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ Program to improve waste management infrastructure.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the grant was signed at the Presidential Secretariat in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The grant will fund the procurement of 28 garbage compactors to enhance waste transport capacity in the Western, Northern, and Eastern Provinces.
The vehicles will be distributed as follows: Western Province – 14 trucks, Eastern Province – 8 trucks, and Northern Province – 6 trucks.
Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, SAYAMA Akiko, praised Sri Lanka’s anti-corruption efforts, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to supporting the country’s development.
The Japanese government expressed its willingness to continue assisting Sri Lanka in governance reforms and anti-corruption measures.
President Dissanayake thanked Japan for its ongoing support, including resuming halted projects and aiding in Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring.
He also requested Japan’s assistance in expanding employment opportunities for Sri Lankan expatriates and improving the country’s public transportation system.
The event was attended by high-ranking officials from both Sri Lanka and Japan, reflecting the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations.
