Jaclyn symes becomes Victoria’s first female treasurer

Jaclyn Symes is set to be sworn in as Victoria’s new treasurer today, making history as the first woman to hold the position.

The MP for Northern Victoria currently serves as the attorney-general and emergency services minister.

Symes will take over from Tim Pallas, who resigned this week after a decade of service in the role.

Pallas, claiming to be the longest-serving standalone state treasurer since taking on the role in 2014 when Daniel Andrews became premier, described it as a “great honour and privilege” to serve the people of Victoria.

Looking back on his career and discussing his resignation, Pallas expressed that it was “simply his time to go.”

His resignation followed closely after he presented the mid-year budget update, which showed an increase in the deficit from $2.2 billion to $3.6 billion for the 2024-25 financial year.
