Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has announced her resignation, ending her leadership after growing pressure from within the Labor Party.

The decision comes just four months before the Victorian state election, following a leadership challenge from Deputy Premier Ben Carroll.

Allan had initially vowed to fight for her position after Labor MPs questioned whether she still had majority support.

However, she has now stepped aside and given Carroll her full support to become the next Labor leader.

The leadership crisis was driven by poor polling, concerns over Labor’s election prospects, and criticism surrounding allegations linked to the Big Build infrastructure program.

Ben Carroll is now expected to take over the leadership, as Victorian Labor seeks to unite the party ahead of the November state election.
