IVF mix-up: woman gives birth to stranger’s baby

A woman has unknowingly given birth to another couple’s child after a serious error at a prominent Australian IVF clinic.

The incident occurred at Monash IVF’s Brisbane clinic, where the wrong embryo was mistakenly transferred due to what the company described as “human error.”

The mistake came to light in February when the birth parents requested to move their remaining embryos to another provider, only to discover an unexpected embryo still in storage.

An investigation confirmed that an embryo from a different patient had been thawed and transferred, resulting in the birth of a child to the wrong family.

Monash IVF has since issued a public apology, with CEO Michael Knaap expressing deep regret over the situation and assuring that support is being provided to both affected families.

The clinic stated that standard safety protocols were followed at the time, and further audits have been conducted to confirm the incident was isolated.

An independent investigation has also been launched to ensure accountability and prevent similar cases in the future.
