Islandwide campaign launched to promote seat belt use on expressways

A program to educate drivers and passengers on the enforcement and practical use of seat belts was held today at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) exit of the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway.

The event took place under the patronage of Harsha Abeywickrama, Chairman of Airports and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Pvt.) Ltd.

As part of the initiative, pamphlets were distributed to raise awareness, and participants—both drivers and passengers—expressed their appreciation for the effort.

Foreign tourists using the expressway also praised the program, which promotes safer transportation.

This initiative is part of a broader campaign under the Ministry’s two-year ‘Road Safety Action Plan’ aimed at reducing fatal and non-fatal road accidents by emphasizing the correct use of seat belts.

The mandatory seat belt law is being rolled out in phases: since 1St of July, all drivers must wear seat belts; from 1st of August , rear-seat passengers in light vehicles on expressways must comply; and from 1st of September , all passengers in all vehicles on expressways will be legally required to wear seat belts.
