Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been killed in Israeli and U.S. strikes, Iranian state media reported.
In an emotional broadcast, a state television presenter confirmed Khamenei’s death and announced that the country would observe 40 days of national mourning. Iranian state television and the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported the 86-year-old leader’s death but did not immediately provide further details regarding the cause.
Hours earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Khamenei had been killed in a joint American-Israeli operation targeting Iran. He described the strike as a decisive action that, in his view, offered Iranians their “greatest chance” to “take back” their country.
The reported assassination of Khamenei — who has led Iran since 1989 — places the future of the Islamic Republic in uncertainty and heightens concerns over potential regional instability amid escalating tensions.
