Investigation launched into alleged illegal foreign passport issuance

The Ministry of Public Security has launched an investigation into the alleged illegal issuance of foreign travel passports.

Minister Ananda Wijepala confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department will lead the probe following reports of unauthorized passport distribution.

Preliminary findings suggest that passports may have been issued in violation of legal procedures, raising concerns about the misuse of the immigration system.

The investigation centers on a recent case involving a forged passport issued to an organized criminal named Kehelbaddara Padme, currently living abroad.

Authorities believe the fake passport was obtained through illicit channels.

Three individuals, including an Assistant Controller of Immigration and Emigration, have been arrested for their suspected involvement in the fraud.
