The Instagram Parental Supervision App, aimed at helping parents monitor the online activity of children aged 13 to 16, was officially launched in Sri Lanka today, according to Digital Economy Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne.

Deputy Minister Weeraratne announced the launch via his official Facebook page, noting that discussions were held with Meta on key topics such as youth safety, data protection, and regulatory compliance ahead of the rollout.

He described the app as a significant step toward ensuring a safer digital environment for Sri Lankan youth, allowing parents to responsibly guide their children’s social media engagement.

The app, already available in 14 other countries, has now been introduced in Sri Lanka as part of the government’s broader digital responsibility agenda.

The Deputy Minister also revealed that Meta has pledged support for Sri Lanka’s upcoming data protection framework, reinforcing its commitment to user safety and legal compliance.

In addition, he highlighted Meta’s global investment of USD 75 billion in AI infrastructure, with its Meta AI product currently serving over one million users free of charge.
