The Mount Lavinia Police have launched an inquiry into the conduct of a lawyer involved in Friday’s (10) incident at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court premises, where a police officer allegedly assaulted the attorney.
According to police, the investigation will examine allegations that the lawyer, along with another senior attorney, verbally abused and obstructed the officer while he was performing his official duties.
This inquiry follows an earlier complaint that the same police officer had assaulted the lawyer as he attempted to drive his vehicle out of the court premises. The officer was subsequently arrested, produced before court, and remanded until October 13.
Police confirmed that video footage of the altercation has been obtained and will be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. Statements from several witnesses present during the incident have also been recorded.
Further investigations are being conducted under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for the Mount Lavinia Division.
