The Committee of Inquiry appointed to investigate Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandhu Tennakoon has found him guilty of all allegations related to gross abuse of power.
Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne announced during today’s (22) session that he received the full report from the Committee, which has recommended the removal of Deshabandhu Tennakoon from the post of IGP.
The committee’s findings were unanimous and were made under Section 8(2) of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002.
Speaker Wickramaratne described the occasion as historic, marking the first time in Sri Lanka’s constitutional history that such a committee has recommended the removal of an Inspector General of Police.
He stated that, as per procedure, the findings of guilt would be presented in the form of a resolution in Parliament’s order paper and will be subject to a vote by Members of Parliament at a later date.
The Speaker also ordered that the Committee’s report be tabled in Parliament and expressed his intention to release the report to the public in light of significant public interest.
He emphasized that it is now the responsibility of Parliament to ratify the Committee’s findings through a formal vote.
The Committee of Inquiry was chaired by Supreme Court Justice P.P. Surasena and included Justice W.M.N.P. Iddawala and E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake, the ex-officio Chairman of the National Police Commission.
The Committee was established following a resolution passed in Parliament on April 4, 2025, under Sections 3(d), 3(e), and 5 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, to probe misconduct and abuse of power by the IGP.
