Inland Revenue Department to take legal action against unpaid taxes

The Department of Inland Revenue announces that outstanding taxes for the assessment year 2023/2024 must be paid before 26th of January 2025.

Inland Revenue Department Commissioner General Sepalika Chandrasekara said that individuals and companies that fail to meet this deadline will not be entitled to penalty relief.

The Department has initiated field surveys and legal proceedings under the Inland Revenue Ordinance to collect unpaid Self Assessment Tax and arrears. 

Bank accounts of defaulters will be seized without prior notice and legal action will be taken from January 2025. 

Additionally, criminal cases can be filed for tax arrears.
