
An individual has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle foreign-made cigarettes worth approximately Rs. 2.85 million into the country.
According to an Ada Derana reporter, the suspect was apprehended while attempting to exit the airport through the “Green Channel,” which is designated for passengers with no goods to declare.
The suspect has been identified as a 58-year-old businessman from Divulapitiya. He arrived in Sri Lanka on a flight from Dubai that landed at 12:50 a.m. today.
During an inspection, Customs officials discovered 95 cartons containing 19,000 sticks of foreign-made cigarettes in his possession.
Further investigations into the incident are being conducted by Customs officials at the Katunayake Airport.
