India’s IndiGo has become the largest foreign carrier out of Sri Lanka, operating 54 weekly flights to and from the island.
The airline services two Sri Lankan cities—Colombo and Jaffna—connecting them with four Indian cities: Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
IndiGo views these direct flights as part of its long-term growth strategy, aimed at expanding its global reach and enhancing India-Sri Lanka bilateral relations.
Vinay Malhotra, IndiGo’s Head of Global Sales, highlighted the airline’s role in stimulating tourism and economic growth by strengthening air connectivity between the two nations.
Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau’s chairman praised the milestone, emphasizing the airline’s contribution to enhancing connectivity, particularly to Jaffna, and fostering growth in the Northern province.
With the rise in Indian tourism, Sri Lanka has seen a significant economic boost, with 200,000 Indian visitors in early 2024, further solidifying the importance of this enhanced connectivity.
