Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, Sunil Handunnetti, announced that a shipment of salt imported from India is expected to arrive in Sri Lanka next Wednesday (28th of May) to help ease the current salt shortage in the country.
He noted that the delay in imports was partly due to ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, which have affected regional trade logistics.
The Minister made these remarks during a media briefing following an inspection tour of the Puttalam Salt Works this morning (19th of May).
Handunnetti also revealed that certain groups have been purchasing salt in bulk, contributing to the shortage. In response, the government is taking steps to release salt to the market in a controlled and regulated manner.
