Indian Naval Ships INS Rana, a Guided Missile Destroyer, and INS Jyoti, a Fleet Tanker, arrived in Colombo to take part in the 12th edition of the Sri Lanka–India Naval Exercise (SLINEX-25), scheduled from 14th to 18th of August .

First launched in 2005, SLINEX has evolved into a key bilateral exercise that has strengthened maritime cooperation between the two nations for nearly two decades. The exercise focuses on enhancing interoperability, sharing best practices, and conducting joint multi-dimensional maritime operations.
The previous edition of SLINEX was held in Visakhapatnam, India, from 17th to 20th of December 2024.
In a post on X on Friday, the Navy spokesperson said the Indian ships were warmly welcomed by Sri Lanka Navy personnel and will participate in drills designed to improve cooperation and coordination between the two navies.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the exercise will be conducted in two phases: the Harbour Phase in Colombo from 14th to 16th of August followed by the Sea Phase from 17th to 18th of August.
Sri Lanka will be represented by SLNS Gajabahu and SLNS Vijayabahu, both Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels, along with Special Forces units from both navies.
During the Harbour Phase, activities will include professional interactions, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, discussions on best practices, cultural and social exchanges, yoga sessions, and sporting events, all aimed at deepening bonds of friendship and camaraderie.
The Sea Phase will feature advanced naval drills such as gunnery firing, communication exercises, navigation and seamanship evolutions, Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS), and replenishment at sea.
SLINEX-25 highlights the growing maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka and reflects India’s policy of “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions” (MAHASAGAR).
