
A 32-year-old Indian national was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle heroin worth Rs. 34 million into Sri Lanka.
The suspect arrived at BIA yesterday (26) at around 4:15 p.m. from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on SriLankan Airlines flight UL-315. During an inspection, officers from the Narcotics Control Division discovered 2 kilograms and 832 grams of heroin concealed in his luggage, leading to his arrest.
Investigations revealed that the Indian national, visiting Sri Lanka for the first time, had planned to deliver the heroin to a local drug dealer at a hotel in Bambalapitiya.
The seized heroin and the suspect were handed over to the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation. The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (27th), where police are expected to request a detention order for further questioning.
