An Indian-origin couple has apologised after a video of them kissing during a garba event in Vadodara went viral. The clip, widely circulated on social media, sparked outrage among many who deemed the act inappropriate for a religious celebration.
The incident occurred on September 26 at the United Way Garba, one of the world’s largest Navratri gatherings, held at the Kalali ground in Vadodara. The event attracts around 30,000 to 35,000 participants each night, including many NRIs. In the viral footage, the couple, married for 16 years and based in Melbourne, were seen dancing before the husband lifted his wife and kissed her.
What was intended as a lighthearted moment quickly turned into controversy as viewers criticised the act as disrespectful to the sanctity of the festival. Some social media users condemned the couple, saying such behaviour was unsuitable for a cultural event, while others defended them, calling it a harmless expression of affection.
Multiple complaints were lodged with Atladra Police Station, prompting authorities to summon the couple. They submitted a written apology, admitting their actions had hurt public sentiments. No further legal action was taken, but the couple reportedly left India soon after.
