India to provide training programmes for Sri Lankan teachers – PM Harini

Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced that India will provide training for Sri Lankan teachers, as part of efforts to enhance the quality of education under upcoming reforms.

She made these remarks at the opening ceremony of the new multi-ethnic trilingual school building in Gallella, Polonnaruwa, which was constructed with assistance from the Government of India.

Dr. Amarasuriya said Sri Lanka is proud to be a nation where people of diverse religions, languages, and ethnicities live in harmony. She emphasized that, for the first time in history, the country is moving forward toward a shared national goal while preserving its diversity.

Commenting on the new trilingual school, she described it as a historic achievement completed despite numerous challenges and noted that a development plan has been prepared to ensure its optimal use. The facility is expected to create more educational and vocational opportunities for youth in the region.

The Prime Minister highlighted that Sri Lanka is preparing to implement major education reforms aimed at providing equal access to quality education for all children. The reforms will not only modernize syllabuses but also transform the overall education system to build a disciplined, responsible, and leadership-oriented generation.

She added that the government is committed to addressing teacher shortages, improving school infrastructure, and ensuring quality learning opportunities across the country.

Dr. Amarasuriya further announced plans to strengthen digital education by equipping schools with modern technology and integrating digital interactive tools into classrooms.

She said that, in collaboration with the Indian government, new training programmes will be introduced for education administrators to bring advanced technological knowledge and innovative ideas into Sri Lanka’s education sector.

“The ultimate goal,” she noted, “is to shape a generation enriched with knowledge, values, and spirituality through education.”

Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha, Deputy Minister of Housing and Water Supply T. B. Sarath, MPs Ratnasiri Bandara and Sunil Ratnasiri, and Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwawila were among those present at the event.
