Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a joint address with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Saturday (5th), emphasized Sri Lanka’s special place in India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision ‘MAHASAGAR’.
On the second day of his three-day official visit, PM Modi highlighted the significant progress in bilateral cooperation since President Dissanayake’s visit to India four months ago.
He announced the inauguration of the Sampur Solar Power Plant, aimed at strengthening Sri Lanka’s energy security. He also noted key agreements to build a multi-product pipeline and develop Trincomalee as an energy hub, alongside the Grid Inter-Connectivity Agreement, which will enable Sri Lanka to export electricity.
PM Modi also inaugurated a 5,000 Solar Rooftop System for religious sites across Sri Lanka and confirmed India’s continued support for the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity project.
He stated that India had converted over USD 100 million in loans into grants within the last six months, as part of a bilateral Debt Restructuring Agreement to provide immediate financial relief. India has also decided to reduce interest rates as a show of solidarity with the Sri Lankan people.
For the Indian Origin Tamil Community, the construction of 10,000 houses is nearing completion. Additionally, training programs for 700 Sri Lankans—ranging from MPs to entrepreneurs and media personnel—are in progress.
On the issue of fishermen, both leaders agreed on a humane approach, with PM Modi calling for the immediate release of detained fishermen and their boats.
Finally, PM Modi stressed the importance of reconciliation and reconstruction, expressing hope that the Sri Lankan Government would fulfill the aspirations of the Tamil people, uphold constitutional commitments, and conduct the long-pending Provincial Council Elections.
