
Sri Lanka and India have agreed on several key energy and development initiatives to strengthen bilateral ties.
These include establishing a high-capacity power grid interconnection, implementing a multi-product pipeline in collaboration with the UAE, and jointly developing offshore wind power potential in the Palk Straits with a focus on environmental protection.
Additionally, plans are underway to develop Trincomalee as a regional energy and industrial hub and to implement the Sampur Solar Project.
President Dissanayake expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for India’s significant support, particularly the nearly USD 4 billion in aid provided during 2022 and 2023, which was instrumental in stabilizing Sri Lanka during a critical period.
India has also played a vital role in Sri Lanka’s financial stabilization efforts, working closely with the IMF following the country’s debt restructuring agreement. As co-chair of the Official Creditors Committee, India continues to assist Sri Lanka through its economic recovery.
Sri Lanka remains one of India’s largest development partners and beneficiaries of capacity-building initiatives.
During President Dissanayake’s visit, the partnership was further strengthened, with special appreciation extended to India for converting loans into grants to provide Sri Lanka with greater fiscal flexibility.
